Following the glowing success of Eternal Eygpt, the first collaboration between Phil Thornton and Hossam Ramzy, a new light of creativity has guided the two of them to work together again in a startling and innovative format. With pieces added by top soloists and session musicians in Cairo, and re-arranged and overlaid by Phil and Hossam back in the UK, the outcome is a magnificent album of high quality performances from the heart of Immortal Egypt.
Instrumentation: Nay, Rebaba, Mizmar, Accordion, Kawala, Violin, E-bow, Guitars, Didgeridoo, with Morrocan, Naggazy, Saaidi, Malfuf and Zaar rhythms.
Album Review
A new album from the redoubtable Phil Thornton returning to a particular fascination he has with the music of Egypt. Again he collaborates with Hossam Ramzy the world famous percussionist who has worked with such artists as The Rolling Stones and Peter Gabriel. Integrating recorded musicians in Cairo with tracks mixed at his Sussex studio, Thornton has managed to create a wonderfully evocative feel to this musical exploration. Ramzy brings inspiration from his early exposure to the music of the Bedouin tribes and his rich knowledge of Middle Eastern musical forms and traditions. A heady and richly textured sound is the fine result of the collaboration and it is another release very recommended from this innovative New World Music stable. This is our Album of the Week.
