Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha) was born in 563 B.C. in India to a noble family. At the age of 29, seeing the abject suffering of humanity for the first time, he abandoned wordly security in a quest for enlightenment. After six years, sitting under a bodhi tree he achieved enlightenment. For the next 45 years of his life he preached the Four Noble Truths:

 

(1) sorrow is the universal experience of mankind

(2) the cause of sorrow is desire

(3) sorrow can only be removed by removing desire itself and

(4) desire can be removed by following the Eightfold Path (a practical guideline to ethical and mental development).
