"Some artists need regular blasts of intensity to spur their creative output, but for Salt Sping classical gutiarist Alan Miceli, creativity rises from a calm and centred place....From start to finish, The Spaces Between is both technically and compositionally impeccable.
Gail Sjuberg - Gulf Islands Driftwood, Nov 13,02
Alan received his first guitar at the age of 12, and grew up under the influence of the 60's rock and roll. Pop culture soon gave way to an interest in classical music, inspired by the likes of Andres Segovia -- the father of the classical guitar -- and American guitarist, Christopher Parkenning. In 1974, he enrolled in the Toronto Conservatory of music. There, he spent two years studying under Norbert Kraft, who helped to develop and refine his playing technique.
By the end of 1976, music took a back seat to a growing awarness of spirituality. Having learned the practice of meditation, Alan became interested in exploring his inner Self. Eighteen years were spent studying with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who thought him the importance of gaining inner silence, and expressing that silence in a creative way. Inspired by guitarists like Alex deGrassi, Alan began experimenting with open tunings and writing his own music.
Alan's CD release of "The Spaces Between" is a product of classical guitar training and years of quiet meditation, combined with innovative creations on the steel guitar. The result is a compilation of solo guitar music that is romantic, melodic, and sensitive; music that beckons one to turn inward; a celebration of not only the notes, but of the spaces between. |
