The Green Man developed independently in the traditions of separate ancient cultures. Though mostly thought of as Celtic, he is not a strictly European deity - similar images appear in Asian, Indian, and Arabic architecture and art. Known as a God of spring and summer, many believe he is related to the Celtic deity Cernunnos, others that he is simply an expression of the forces of nature, or even a reminder that we, too, are part of the cycle of life. He serves as the embodiment of untamed nature, an emblem of the male principal, and a symbol of fertility and vibrant life energy. In the 20th Century, the Green Man stands as a modern ecological symbol, and is often seen as "the archetype of our oneness with the earth".
